S.S. Brittain & Co, Sheffield 1880s “swan” logo gentlemen’s dagger; rare type
Rare Sheffield-made circa 1880s gentlemen’s fighting dagger with dual-edged blade and celluloid handle with fancy silver collar and balled handguard. Made by S.S. Brittain & Co. in Sheffield, England. The blade is marked with the «swan» logo on the blade and S.S. BRITTAIN & CO. / SHEFFIELD . This dagger style with a wide, fullered blade is rare and seldom comes up for sale. The blade is very sharps still, the tip is intact; some light surface rust on both sides is noted for accuracy. The dagger is about 8-3/4″ / 22.2 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/8″ / 13 cm. The handle is made from off-white celluloid; the collar looks sterling silver. Balled cross guard is German silver’ the collar and the guard have quite a bit of a paly. Original sheath did not survive.
